Dr. Larson researches kelp forest and rock reef fishes of California.  He supervised over 40 Master's students, and served on over 150 additional thesis committees.

He served as President of the Western Society of Naturalists (2006), Chair of the Board of Governors, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (2002-2004), Vice President (2005-present) and Board of Directors member (2002-present) for the San Pedro Creek Watershed Coalition, Master Plan Team member for implementation of the Marine Life Protection Act, California Department of Fish and Game (2000-2003), Member of the Advisory Committee for Nearshore Fisheries Management Plan (2000-2001), San Mateo County Fish and Wildlife Advisory Committee (1991-1996), Fellow of California Academy of Sciences (appointed 1993), and President (1994-1996) of SF State Sigma Xi chapter.  In 1985, he was a Visiting Associate Professor of Biology at the Hopkins Marine Station, Stanford University.

In 1996, he received a Merit Award, Physiology Section from the American Fisheries Society.

Dr. Larson retired in 2006, but keeps active in fish conservation activities.  He has logged over 2300 dives, and currently serves as Chair of the SF State Diving Control Board.
